History

The school was established in 1991.

Mrs. Helayne Van Houten won the coveted achievement of Woman of the Year for the 80th Assembly District during the 2008 school year. She is one of the original staff members from 1991.

Tenth grade scores for the CAHSEE have risen from the lowest to the highest in the valley because of the new principal Guillermo Chavez's effort to improve scores and phenomenal performances by the English teachers weeks prior to the test. The CAHSEE is necessary in order to graduate. These performances and the determination shown by teachers recently proved a plus for the visit by WASC members. In three weeks, the accreditation results will be received, resulting in a one, three, or six year accreditation. It has been foretold that this has been one of the best visits by the WASC team and a six-year accreditation is expected. Cathedral City High School has the highest testing scores in the Palm Springs Unified School District, and the second highest in the Valley.

Arts

The CCHS Bands, under the direction of Mr. Gregory X. Whitmore, have played in New York City, London, Germany, and elsewhere, and have earned many awards. More information on the band can be viewed at their official website, http://cchsbands.org/index.html.

The school's Theater program produces a fall comedy or drama and a spring musical every school year, and the shows are under the direction of Mr. Michael Q. Thelen. The Theater III class also attends the Drama Teachers Association of Southern California Fall Festival every year, and recently made it to Semi-Finals in the Large Group Comedy category and Finals in the One Act category in 2011. The spring musical for 2012 will be West Side Story, with audition taking place the first week of January 2012, and the show opening in March 2012.

Golden Lion

Every year, in May, the Golden Lion awards ceremony takes places. Certificates and medals are awarded to students who perform exceptionally in a certain school subject. The overall award, the "Golden Lion," is given to the Senior who best exemplifies the perfect student.
